From my online Golf Lesson Tom suggested to me to drop my hands at set up to directly below my shoulders rather than stretching away from the vertical axis towards the ball. This meant the club lieing a little heel down but it improved my swing a lot as well as promoting a little draw.
I was wondering if this set up hand position is only vertical for the shorter irons and as you lengthen the club especially the woods then the hands need to be increasingly closer to the ball with perhaps for the driver the hand position being approximately 3-4 inches off vertical nearer ball.
Looking at pictures of Tom at address for short irons v driver this concurs?
@info - The arms hang straight down from the shoulders (down-the-line view) for all clubs except for the driver. With the driver we push them an inch or so further out to encourage more of an around the body motion. (This KFC Club lesson speaks to the subtle differences in the swing plane for short vs. longer clubs despite the fact that the arms are naturally hanging down from the shoulders for both.)
Here are a couple of excerpts from the S&T book related to the setup.
