While doing some mirror work, it became apparent that the width of my stance may be too narrow for irons, at least from 4-9 iron, and maybe even for the driver. I did some experiments to see how stance width can help reduce, or eliminate the chance of shifting my weight on top of, or outside of my trail foot, and thus my hula hoop swing arc is to my right...not good.
If I take a very wide stance, there's no way to get my weight on top of or especially outside of my trail foot. However, swinging a club with that stance is not good. So then I put my feet about a foot apart. From that position it's SUPER easy to transfer weight on top of or outside my trail foot. So there's got to be a middle ground whereby during my backswing, my weight will most likely be on the inside of my trail foot.
After checking in the mirror (and closing my eyes to feel my weight), my optimal stance width is nearly identical to Tom's stance with when he hits demo iron shots. It's definitely wider than my prior width, maybe 3 inches. But from that width it's much harder to shift weight to the trail side, and much easier to keep my weight on the inside of my trail heel.
Maybe Tom could do a video about stance width because I think a LOT of folks overlook how a narrow vs wider stance can allow too much weight drift to the trail side vs. being stacked over the ball.
@GolfLivesMatter stance appears to me to affect contact point(s) with the golf ball. Being Stacked puts shoulders, hips, upper torso, in correct alignment for striking the ball solid.
@GolfLivesMatter - I do speak a bit about stance width towards the middle of this lesson on ball position. However, I believe it's good for golfers to experiment as you did to feel the effects of too wide vs. too narrow in order to back into their ideal.
