What do you think about the position of the trail index finger on the grip? I've been experimenting with having the bottom pad of the finger resting on the back of the shaft with my finger 1-2 finger widths apart (down the shaft) from my middle finger. It seems to give me more control. Thoughts?

Welcome to this great forum community, @gregory.elwell!
My main concerns with regard to grip are that the handle remains secure in the fingers throughout the entirety of the motion and that the proper hinging and unhinging of the wrists is fully supported without any contrived effort. Beyond that, each golfer is free to add their own individual flair and determine what works best for them.
On a side note, many golfers make various changes to how they hold the club without considering that perhaps the grips on their clubs are not properly sized for their hands. Think about it - who came up with the "standard" grip size, anyway? How small were their hands, and how many golfers over the years have not come close to enjoying their full potential as a result of trying to hold a toothpick in their mitts?? In other words, having properly sized grips is critically important as they are our only connection to the object that is going to deliver us blissful joy or deep anguish, yet it is perhaps also the most overlooked equipment fitting component in golf.
