Quick question as I work on the backswing.
Do you start the turn IN with your hands as soon as you start your takeaway as you move hands toward your trail side hip, or do you go along the toeline straight back for the first part a little longer? I have watched several of the backswing videos and it seems like Tom starts turning on the circle inward with low hands pretty quickly.
I hit about 50 pitch shots of 20-30 yards tonight around practice green and it seemed like the sooner I started turning inside, the better crisper contact I was getting.
I am working gradually on moving from shorter irons to mid and longer irons and driver.
It feels weird to not go straight back and then turn and lift. Also feels weird to come from inside so much on downswing. But as I trust it more I am more often hitting clean shots compressing the ball. Feels like I am swinging to opposite field in extreme way in baseball but ball contact is great when I do it correctly.
Nice progress update, @Mojoman! Sounds like you are on a good track now. Stick with 2.8/Flying Wedge and be patient as you move incrementally into longer clubs. Also, make sure to only take your backswing to your body's natural stopping point, because anything beyond that will cause breakdowns and summon up the ghosts of swings past. And remember - because you are taking the hands in deep it may "look" like just a 3/4 swing in comparison to an old shift & lift move, so you need to learn to trust that it really is all that you need.
Making progress slowly.
Hardest things to do are keeping weight on front side throughout swing, and swinging from inside. I start out Ok with wedge and 9 iron. Breaks down and I revert to old habits. 😫 Outside in takes over.
Yesterday got pretty frustrated on range with 6 iron slicing, fat, etc.
Went back to practice green area and hit nothing but 30-40 yard pitches with weight on front foot.
Realized that my inside to out swing path when hitting them flush was like aiming at 9 o clock (I am left handed). Magically the clubface squares up. Makes no sense and feels like I am hitting ball way to the left but it is straight, or slight draw.
Today went to range and gradually worked my way from P to 9 to 8 with the flying wedge drill (2.8). Made good contact with most of them and lengthened swing slowly. Then pulled out the Driver. Moved ball up and moved more weight to front on setup. Had some promising results.
Thanks. Great video. Off to the range.......
Let your ball striking be your guide, @Mojoman....
The hands and club begin their concentric inward tracks right off the ball. Remember, we are swinging on a tilted circle, so we need to be true to it by not tracing some kind of oval.
The bird's eye view perspective in this channel video should provide a nice visual for you in this regard.
