I play primarily in muni course in the DFW market and the quality of sand in bunkers is all over the place. I have a new high bound (12 degree) wedge and have had inconsistency when not dealing with fluffy sand. What is the recommended technique for this type of situation? Do you square up the face more and use a lower lofted club (gap?) with a shorter swing? Curious on how to deal with this as it is costing me strokes. Tnx!
Matt
Excellent post, @Russell Hogue, PhD. Thanks for sharing!
This past year was horrible for my sand game because COVID restrictions had us pulling out of bunkers or rake and placing the ball… Usually by mid-way through the season I don’t mind bunker shots at all…this year, didn’t get comfortable all year. Will definitely have some catch-up work to do this year. I use a 58 degree wedge for all shorter bunker shots. I open the club face up a lot (probably 45-55 degree open). It’s gonna come out high and stop fast. If I have to hit a longer bunker shot, I will usually do pretty much the same setup, but use a 54 degree wedge.
@Matt Kelton - This is one of those things that is best figured out through practice. I personally tend towards the type of technique that @Nocona Colt Abernathy is prescribing. However, I've seen my dad - who is a pretty good greenside bunker player - use the bounce to blast it out of firm sand as well as "wet cement".
@Matt Kelton For hard packed sand, you want to play more like a regular chip off the fringe.
I would definitely have a more square setup and club face and try to catch ball first. If you hit behind the ball in hard packed sand, the bouce will send the club up into the ball and you’ll blade it.
A couple of other tips. Like other chip shots, don’t be steep into the ball and don’t let the club head pass the hands.
thanks
