If you're toying with the idea of getting hybrid irons, it's really hard to find an honest review........until now.
3 months ago, I bought a set of Ram laser hybrid irons from Ebay for £100 ($140). I had been toying with the idea of buying a set for sometime as I struggle to hit my longer irons and my ball flight is generally low. I'd seen some reviews but not a lot of time or effort had been put into these so it was hard to get a good, general review.
On first impressions they look absolutely awful BUT you do get used to them after a while. The sound of the ball off the club is pretty hollow and whilst carrying them in my bag, I'm pretty worried they will chip. I don't think you can work the ball too much with them and I don't think they carry as far as standard irons. However, they are remarkably easy to hit with an amazing high launch and soft landing. They glide through rough like a knife through hot butter and after a few shots with them, you feel very confident standing over the ball. I found them easier to hit then a standard hybrid. Like I said, I bought these 3 months ago and have now only tried them out today......what a mistake to waste 3 months of the summer not using them. There is a stigma behind these "game improver" hybrid irons that they are for beginner and high handicappers, but if they make the game easier, then why not use them? Golf is a hard enough game as it is, and one of my main stumbling points is my pride! After using these for a trial, casual 9 holes of experimental golf, I think it's time to swallow my pride.
That's great, @Ian "Twiggy" Jones!! Fabulous posts, and I'm very happy to learn of that post-round smile on your face!! 😊
Went and had a proper 9 holes with these this evening.
I hit 33% GIR which for me is an improvement. Poor tee-shots put me behind trees on 2 holes which potentially reduced that number.
I find these clubs really easy to hit. So much so, a mate of mine was on the course and he hit a 7 iron 150 yards just short of the green. Please note he plays off scratch and is right handed! He said the same as me, that they sound awful but he doesn't mind the look of the club at address just the lump on the back of the club.
Off the tee, these are wonderful to hit with such a high launch. My misses are now small with no really big hooks or slices. I've started to see a bit of chipping of the paintwork at the back of the club due to them rattling around as I carry my bag.
Walked off the course tonight with a 6 over par 39 and a big smile on my face. 18 putts and 2 bad drives cost me going lower but the enjoyment I'm getting from hitting these clubs is making golf more fun.
I would highly recommended anyone to try out a set of these if they can, especially if you are inconsistent with your current irons. There are other brands on the market with Cleveland, Wilson and Cobra all introducing their own takes on these and I imagine many more will follow because demand will be there once people get past the stigma attached to these.
If they make the game easier and more enjoyable then why not use them?
