So if you remember last week I went through a hack fest for 2 weeks and then found my stroke when my partner said I was reverse pivoting. Got my swing back but was still hitting straight or mild push (but manageable). Today I closed my stance all the way down to 8 iron and square for the short irons. I think it solved for more tilt, more turn, and draw (not to mention an extra 10 yards per club). Much harder to reverse pivot with closed stance.
Not sure if a fluke but shot my best 9 ever with a 40 (this is 2nd season playing and last year I was restricted wait list so mostly range play). When I came home I looked in the mirror and it shows a steeper tilt and bigger turn with closed stance (I guess more room). Is there anything wrong from a long term point of view doing "stack and tilt" with a slightly closed stance? My understanding is only Snead and Palmer played closed. Most other pros are square.
I got to this line of reasoning (closing the stance a bit) after doing the right "foot back" drill in Tom's videos.
Nice job figuring out what works well for you, @tomhayes188!!
@burkholder.ronald is spot on in his reply. I'll only add this supporting info from the S&T book....
The closed stance will promote a more in to out swing path. You just have to make sure you don't overdo it and start hitting hard hooks. As long as you are hitting it crispy and the ball is curving to the intended target, I would say that is a good thing for your swing. The other thing to watch out for is the closed stance causing you to stop your through swing such that you wind up flipping the clubhead through impact. As with most things in life, moderation is the key.
