How much time do you/should you spend on the range vs on the course. Benefits to both. Refining a swing with no penalties against putting yourself in actual game setting.
I've pretty much abandoned the Range. I use the course for my practice and buy loads of cheap balls. I'm trying my swing changes on the course so, I get lots of errant shots that I barely look for. I'll just drop another or, take a penalty and drop where it went in if I'm keeping score. My feeling is that I'll be comfortable on the course and alleviate all the stress about embarrassing yourself. It's work great. I'm at a point where I actually do better, usually, when someone is watching because I'm not quite as care free. I haven't visited a driving range since January. I try to get to the local course at slow times and play 9. I can play the 9 holes in an hour and a half, even with some bunker, chipping and putting practice. Per tom's advice, on a day like that, if I'm in a bunker I'll drop 2 more balls and take 3 practice bunker strokes. By the time you drive to the range, buy balls, hit a bucket, it about the same amount of time.

I do swing into a net pretty regularly however.
