I am getting excited to be playing 18 holes for the first time with the S&T. Its Only 8:15 here in Honolulu and I will be playing the Bayview Golf Course in Kaneohe. It's not a large course and it's more like a par 3 with a few par 4's scattered about. I really thought it would be a good place to start. #1 it's only 30 bucks. It also gives me a chance to work on that short game. As I looked over the scorecard at the yardage for each hole I am confused about what to hit. For example, I know I can hit my 9 almost 150 the first hole is 130 so do I go down in clubs or take something of the 9? I could go the the PW and see what happens. how about my gap wedge? There are only 5 holes where I will even bring out the driver. I am thinking that as I play more I will get more familiar with the clubs and how I hit them. Smack the hell out of it for full distance or gently without coming down so hard? Is it all about finesse and knowing your capabilities with each club?
I'm thinking yes. But please correct me if I am wrong. I have so many questions but I don't want to appear I am spamming the board. I will have a full update after my round so you have something fun to read in the morning. Dont play until 3:00pm
Some excellent advice here from your fellow members, @Tom Holt. Bottom line: it's up to YOU to figure out your capabilities with each club, and that is a fun part of the process!
@Tom Holt You'll need to figure out your yardage for each club. Then based on conditions and course layout you'd have to think strategy. For example. For the 130y hole I'd have to think of where the pin is. Yardage on the course is usually center of the green. If the pin is back you may hit a 9i to carry a bit more than 130. If the pin is up front and the green is fast you may have to play it 110ish or so and hopefully role up or land just past the pin? So playing it 110ish won't require your 9i. So many factors come into play when trying to land the green. If there is trouble in the back of the green you may want to play is safe and pick a club that would take that out of play. Bunkers up front you need to carry then make sure you fly those so pick a club that can get you to at least the front of the green. I use a garmin s60 watch that tells me the yardage to the front, center and back of the green. Then based on hazards and pin location I pick a club. If the pin is up front I usually play for the front 1/3 of the green. Hopefully that makes sense. Think it through and play the shot.
with range balls!
Dear Tom H - when you said you hit your 9 iron about 150 I thought it was Tom S making a post. As the "98 pound golf weakling" I am thinking I could use some lessons from Charles Atlas in addition to Tom S, whose phrase I have quoted to myself over and over: "Hit it with the wrath of God!"
I usually club-up to guarantee my hitting the green. However, with the new S&T Swing, I would go down to a PW at 9:00 o’clock swing. Your call.
