Tom, I have finally completed the course curriculum and had my first opportunity to go to the range.
The first thing I did was to set up the grid with the alignment rods and balls, and started waist high practice swings from ball position #3 on the draw side. Started with my 7 iron to hybrid 4, 4 wood and then driver, only waist high. I then went back to the 7 iron and worked on 3/4 swings for my first range session, and was hitting about 65% crispy, which was fantastic for me. This is the weakest link in my game, and this was a fantastic start. I plan on staying at half and 3/4 swings for the next three sessions prior to moving to a full swing. Having a little problem being to quick from the top. Need a smooth transition and gradual acceleration. What are your recommendation to slow and smooth out the down swing?
By the way, Cordell, my twin brother joined, and shot a 71, one under par, last week from the senior tees.
Look forward to more range sessions to work into a full swing. I would expect a couple of months to reach that goal.
I have completed all of the courses, Golf Swing Simplified, Pitching and Chipping, Putting, Fades and Draws, Bunker Play, etc., except for the Get Out and Go Play. I am currently going through the Crispy section. I assume the Get Out and Go Play is a condensed version of the Golf Swing Simplified section. I will be working on the noted tips as soon as I can get back to the range.
This is great stuff, @cornellarterbury. It is precisely the way to patiently and incrementally embrace the process, and because of this you will enjoy results sooner rather than later!
When you say that you have completed the course curriculum, are you referring to the Golf Swing Simplified course or the Get Out and Go Play fast track program? If the former, then my best suggestion is to park yourself on Drill 2.8. If the latter, then the Flying Wedge Drill is the one. In either case.... Learn it. Practice it. Master it. You can even use this partially abbreviated swing on the course and play quite well with it as it will provide plenty of distance! (It actually is the full swing minus just a couple of power accumulators.) Once you've got that down, you will be well prepared to move forward in the curriculum and well on your way towards taking ownership of YOUR swing!
As for being quick from the top, that's something that afflicts approximately 98.7% of amateur golfers. Defeating this is all a matter of 1) Trusting your swing motion - which will happen over time and repetition - so that you can "give up control to get control", and 2) Eliminating the "hit" mindset that causes us to want to hammer down into the ball, and replacing it with a "swing" mindset in which the ball just happens to be in the way of a properly executed and tension-free motion. One drill that may help you to ingrain the shallowing feel from the top is this past weekend's YT channel episode on "Dumping the Basket". Give it a try with your 1/2 to 3/4 swings.
Nice work so far, and a shoutout to your brother Cordell for his success!!
