Tom and Rob, and Eric all teach what I classify as being the best all around golf swing that does not come from their own personal biases. What do I mean by bias? Some instructors have their own issues that they fight, like "over-rotation" of the shoulders. Thus, when they teach a person who under-rotates his shoulders, that person will under-rotate even more. If an instructor is taller or shorter, that can also influence their teachings for folks who are the opposite in height. Some are slender or chunkier. They would also have certain notions about the swing and the opposite body type guy could go down the wrong path.
Even Hogan's book is influenced by his need to eliminate the left side of the fairway. Nicklaus was a different player than Hogan, so his book was "more" geared towards his swing style, build, and feels. Most of the content in both books is great, but some of their feels, like Hogan's "arms wrapped together at address" may cause a player who already has good arm position to overdo that position. Then they can barely swing with fluidity and think Hogan was "wrong", or chase that thought for decades without any luck. Plus, some folks arms can be a little more separated at address, but they move together during their backswing, so no need for the Hogan "thought".
Tom's new video about backswing tilt featuring Dustin Johnson is great. However, imagine Dustin teaching everyone to bow their lead wrist like he does at the top? Yikes! He bows it like crazy for some reason, but he gets it back to perfect position at impact...but only he, and a very few others do that move.
Plus, many instructors assume their feels vs. real are the same. If I watch Rob demonstrate the backswing, it looks really flat. But then when Rob actually hits a ball, his backswing is more upright, or more like Dustin Johnson's. For me, I pay less attention to static positions and more to the actual positions when instructors hit balls.
Uh oh, but I must say this.....get ready....here it goes...my KFC Crispy status will be terminated....Tom's backswing is nearly identical to Dustin's at the top in terms of shaft position over the trail shoulder even though Tom demonstrates a somewhat flatter backswing position when demonstrating static backswing positions.
Been nice knowing all of you!!! (but keep in mind I said Tom's swing is like one of the top ten golfers in the world).
LOL! You'll live to see another day, @GolfLivesMatter. DJ and I are fellow Chanticleers (Coastal Carolina University alums for those who have no idea what a Chanticleer is), and beyond that quite frankly I'm okay with the comparison because DJ is fully TILTED, TURNED, & EXTENDED at the top...
