I was not able to golf most of the summer due to some health issues, just twice in March. I am able now, with some restrictions, and have golfed a few times this month - mainly on my favorite par 3 course so I don't need to use a driver - docs orders. Anyway, it's getting chilly here in Michigan and I am preparing for some cold weather golf - which I never really have done. Outside of some long underwear, which I picked up, any other suggestions or tips for golfing in the cold? Also curious what is the coldest weather folks have golfed in? I had planned to go until the snow flies, but then I stepped outside this morning and it was chilly man, like 40 degrees. Not sure it would be much fun to golf when it's that cold - I am thinking 50 and above. But then again I was not dressed for it and walking on the course. Surely walking helps to keep you warmed up yes?
Anyway, where better to get some feedback right?
Cheers,
AE
@alan_edwards Hi Alan! Glad to hear you have been cleared to play golf. I live down here in Northern Alabama. My Daughter comes to visit me for my Birthday in early January each year. Which means that we try and play as much golf as humanly possible in a weeks time. This means having all those warm weather items that have been discussed on hand when we go and play. I would have to agree with the consensus here that go and play if the sun is shining and the temps are in the 50’s.
The coldest I’ve played in was with my daughter a couple of years ago. I’m retired Navy, so we went to play one of the Military courses. It was a real sunny day with no breeze. But, the outside air temperature was only in the mid 30’s.The man working at the counter looked at us with a blank stare when we said we wanted to play 18 holes.
We explained to him that the reason we wanted to play on such a cold day was because my daughter was only here for a few days and this was going to be the best day to play! The weather expected for the next several days was going to be colder and possible freezing rain or snow.
He explained to us that we would have to leave the course if they decided to go ahead and close the course before we finished. To make a long story short, we went and played 18 holes. I’ll never forget that experience. I have never been so frozen than I was when we finished playing. Decided after that time to never play again in that cold weather. Lesson learned! Go and play when you can play comfortably! 😊
Thanks for all the comments fellow members. I will give an update after my first cold weather round. Going to layer up, keep my hands and feet warm and avoid real windy days. I am really looking forward to it.

Here, in MA, some courses are open through the winter, as long as the ground is dry. I haven't tried golfing below 55, early in the AM, but being a former skier, I say if it's too warm to ski, (45 degrees+), it's warm enough for golf. As was said, on a sunny day, with little wind, it should be OK. Longjohns, warm hat, cold weather golf gloves, and warm socks, and you're set to go. Have fun.

P.S. For Tom:
I'm writing to you here on the forum, because this is the only way I can reach you.
I haven't been able to access the sight on my computer or laptop. I login, choose a category, then a lesson, and I'm instructed to login again. It goes round and round like that, and I can never access the lesson. I did email you at info@saguto.golf. I don't know how else to get tech help.
Please email back.
Thanks.
Paula
@alan_edwards - I believe that @Alan Studnicky lives up your way, so he may have some thoughts on this. My dad said that when we were in Rochester, NY, as long as the wind wasn't blowing and there was minimal snow on the ground, they would play since up there it felt like you were "stealing" a day from ol' man winter. In PA, we played when the temp was 40 or above, but again - minimal wind and no snow on the ground. Here in SC, we've played when it was in the low 40's because we had golfing guests from out of town and had to accommodate, but otherwise when we have a choice it's 50 and above with minimal wind. "Changes in latitudes, changes in attitudes", I suppose... 😎
As suggested by others, long underwear, heavy socks, layers, stocking caps, and gloves. Beyond that, get out there and take advantage of the extra roll on those frozen tundra fairways and solid water hazards!
@alan_edwards - Hi Alan. I lived in MI 9 years but never played golf there. For golf, wear layers of clothing and shed them as the body warms up.
@alan_edwards it depends. If the wind is calm and the sun is shining, 40 degrees won’t feel too bad. If the wind is blowing but the sun is shining then maybe long underwear and a wind breaker will work.
The key is how to keep your hands and feet warm. Two socks works for the feet normally. When I play with cold weather golf gloves on both hands I switch to a baseball grip instead of my normal interlock grip.
My personal minimum is to play as long as it is forecasted to get above 50 degrees sometime during the round. Then I dress for the wind and sun light conditions.
