We should make a golf course totally out of hitting mats. I hit them off the grass today And I am a little disappointed in my performance. Not completely because I hit some good ones and I did make good solid contact with many. I can also report there are many homeless worms from my hitting box.
Many times when I was making good contact the ball went right. Not slice right, just far right of the target and when I pulled my hands back the clubface was closed. Chopping wood? I started trying to have a better finish but it was so hot I almost melted. hard to concentrate. I will say that with the driver I had some good shots too but not everything.
So I will now have to hit out of the grass for my own sanity and try to duplicate what I did on the mats on Sunday which was phenomenal.
I took some photos of my divot trail and they are pointed at the target but many went right.I will try to post that if anyone wants to see it.
Love this game.
I'll trade with you on the melting, it's 8 below right now!
@Tom Holt - Ron is spot on with regard to the impact condition that caused your straight pushes.
We should always first default to checking your setup elements before considering any kind of swing intervention. We all fall into the trap of getting too comfortable, and we then begin to take our grip, stance, posture, alignment, ball position, etc. for granted, but without proper attention these things do tend to creep on us over time. 90% of the result is already determined before we even take the club back, yet I've seen so many folks make a mess out of an already sound swing because they overlooked or did not consider the foundational elements of the setup.
By the way, if you think you're melting down there now, just wait a few months. Toto, your not on Oahu anymore..... 😎 (It's similar here at the SC coast in the summer, though perhaps with a bit more humidity. I love it!)
I had a couple of those today also. Straight right, no curve. If the ball goes straight, then the face was lined up with the path at impact. So, sounds like your path was in to out, which is good, but your face did not get closed to the path at impact. Regardless of what the face looks like at set up or post swing, it is where it is pointed at impact that determines the ball flight. It may be that you made a good swing, but you were aimed to the right. It is a good idea to pick out something about 6-12 inches in front of your ball on a line that is slightly to the right of the ball to target line to aim your club face at during the setup. Then swing to the right of that, but keep your face pointed at your spot. Your ball will start to the right and then draw back to the target.
