It happens when I go back. I am not keeping that weight forward. when I turn my shoulder to the ball I am shifting ever so slightly to the back and not catching up in time to hit the ball, so I dig. Or if I get too far ahead I top. I also have a tendency to be too fast on the takeaway and it seems to set the pace on the downswing and trying to knock the cover off the ball. Unfortunately I am not getting that weight forward so the FASTER I swing the deeper I dig. Hitting behind the ball is exactly what I am doing. But the upside to that is when I have it all working, it is the most satisfying thing. Beautiful, sweet, crispy crunchy, mashed tater with a biscuit with beautif airtime and distance. I am on my way.

@Tom Holt keeping the weight forward is a fundamental of this swing and can be hard to do sometimes. Since we move a lot of weight composed of the club head, shaft, and our arms away from the target in the backswing it takes a significant effort to keep our weight forward. A fast backswing adds momentum to all this weight going away from the target, also.
I have had some success with focusing on my tailbone . Tom has some videos about making sure the tailbone moves toward the target during the backswing and then even more during the downswing and follow through.
