Just wanted to share my thoughts about the grip pressure if this could help someone else
I just realised the importance of a firm grip in maintaining all the angles that you create at setup.
I have always been a loose gripper of the club and even when i have taken a secure enough grip still have been flipping through impact and overswinging.
Now when i take my grip at setup i have been doing the opposite feeling of loose grip, almost like a death grip feeling so that the wrist angles are kept intact through the whole swing especially through impact. Because of this my whole body seems to be moving properly, keeping my arms straight through impact and stops me from overswinging also.
Even though i grip the club very firm, my arms are relaxed enough to not prevent the folding of the trail arm.
Also getting the trail hand on top of the lead hand and pressuring the lead thumb is important. This ensures you can put pressure on the shaft on impact with the trail hand.
Also, all my current swing flaws still present( overswinging, flipping, loss of connection) have all been caused by a loose grip.
Yes, great point Jari! The lighter the hold on the club, the more room for the hands and wrists to move.
That brings me to this point - grip pressure is entirely subjective. What is secure feeling to you may feel different to me. Your death grip FEEL might feel like a 50% grip pressure to me.
That is why I emphasize SECURITY in your grip. You increase the grip pressure until the grip is SECURE - not moving in your hands at any point of the golf swing.
One thing i have also realised.
It seems to be the best option to grip the club the way your arms naturally hang.
For a long time i have been wondering why it is so hard for me to initiate the takeaway without any hand action involved.
My natural grip for my lead hand is to see 3 knuckles, i have always used a more neutral grip with 2 knuckles, for this reason my lead hand has wanted to turn to that 3 knuckle position right from the start of the takeaway.
Now when i grip with my lead hand seeing 3 knuckles my hands stay quiet without any need to turn clockwise and causing the clubface to open
Great job figuring out how to get a grip on your respective games, @Jari Hissa & @Cody McDowell!!
@Jari Hissa I actually noticed this same thing here recently. I use to grip the club tight but my trail hand never really covered my lead thumb. My hands were almost independent. After watching toms videos about grip and wrist hinge in the golf swing I realized I need to slide the trail hand down. This improved my swing and got rid of some pain I was having in my hand from squeezing the life out of the club
Great self-discovery, @Jari Hissa!! This is an exact point I was conveying in a recent YT channel video on the grip. Loose grips sink ships... (or something like that)...🤣
We definitely don't want that handle swimming around in our hands, or our wrists flip-flopping around because we're so loosey goosey that we can control the clubface. A firm grip and soft arms is what we're after here. That prescription will certainly resonate differently for different folks, but you nailed it in that our grip pressure should give us complete control of the club while not introducing swing-killing tension that prevents us from properly executing the motion. Finding that sweet spot is a highly individual thing, and it is critical to consistently blissful ballstriking.
Fantastic post. I hope others will chime in!
