Hi Saguto golfers and golffettes!
I've been playing golf for 35 plus years. I'm a lefty and currently play off 6.4. Did get as low as 5.6 a few years ago but in recent years my game fell apart. I took to YouTube for tips and found myself taking "part information" tips from various channels. When I look back, I had no chance of success with all these tips for 2 reasons:
1 - All these tips gave me more swing thoughts and I had no idea how to put them together
2 - The tips are generalised without having a base to work from
I then stumbled across Tom's channel and I instantly related to what he was teaching. The S & T was exactly what I was looking for......making golf simple again and in turn, making it fun again!
I live in Wales in the UK, and due to Covid, I had to move from my home course of 35 years to a more local one. It's a more challenging par 33, 9 hole course, with 3 par 3's, approach shots to elevated small greens, and a tight driving course with very few "birdie" holes.
These were my stats from a curtailed 2020 season

As you can see, my score to par was +6, I couldn't hit the "big dawg" and my irons just lacked any type of consistency. I became too reliant on my short game which over a long period just isn't sustainable.
Wales has been in lockdown since December 19th with golf courses closed, so I have been practising indoors working through the online golf school which is absolutely fantastic! Today, our Welsh government has announced that golf courses can re-open from Saturday! I hoping to get out on the course this weekend but I'm not expecting the round of my life, but just to see some progress on what I've learnt from Tom. The feels are there, and it is different to what I've been used to for so long but its a work in progress.
This was my old swing below
This is the new "Saguto" swing:
The main differences are in the set-up, weight forward, arms more connected and hands-in but still work to do!
I will keep you updated on my progress so for now, happy golfing!
I had a nice enjoyable 9 holes this morning. Course was in fantastic condition, greens firm and fast and a bit of wind to contend with. Shot 40 which I'm pretty happy with as I'm consistently around that mark. Long game was a D- again but short game and especially the putting was on fire.
Something very positive happened to me though on the last hole. I was out of position on the left hand side, blocked out by trees so needed to hit a big cut. Thinking about the grid, I played the ball further forward, and hit a 6 iron. Ball pretty much went straight. However it was a KFC crispy 6 iron that launched off the clubface!
I had noticed earlier in my round my wedges were drawing about 10 yards which got me thinking am I playing the ball too far back in my stance. I take my ball position from my lead heel but as I change stance width, the ball is creeping further back. I trialled for a few holes after my 9 to set-up my ball position from the "zero" point with the assumption that my shoulder width cannot be a variable, it's consistent in width.
Massive breakthrough! I was hitting lovely high draws with my 6 and 5 iron with pure KFC contact and hit an effortless 250 yard drive which is something I haven't been doing at all with the longer clubs. Early results are promising and I'm really excited to create a fake work meeting with a client for tomorrow morning and put this into practice!
