I am getting back into golf after not playing for 20+ years. I have FirstFlight irons (3-9, PW, SW) that date back to the early 1990's that I have had regripped and seem OK. When I get a solid strike they perform as I remember back in my younger years. Some of my golf buddies seem to think I should go for the new technology irons and that the old irons will hold back my game. However, I tend to think I really need to work mostly on my swing and that new irons would only be a marginal improvement. I would be interested in Tom's and the general Saguto Golf community's opinion on this topic. Thanks!

I just shelved by callaway Diablo edge irons and got a set of sim max irons. The forgiveness is unreal.
I think any golfer with say a 12+ handicap should for sure be using cavity back, not blades. There are even some tour pros that use some cavity back(long/mid irons), that's my understanding at least. Then after that on the price scale are forged irons. There are plenty of used sets on FB marketplace that make the price very reasonable.I picked up a set of Callaway Apex irons from a kid for $400, he was moving up to mizuno blades. Just my thoughts.
Welcome to this fabulous SG Forum Community, @david allison!! I hope to see you participating here regularly!
There are many members here who are far superior "equipment junkies" than me. You may find some of them based on their responses in this comment thread, and then you can tag them directly here in your post to seek their opinions. (To tag someone just type the "@" symbol followed by the name and they should pop up for you to select.)
From my perspective, you can certainly learn the swing system with your older clubs, but given the advances over the past 30 years you will be leaving a considerable amount of distance and accuracy on the table when you take them out to the course relative to those players with more current equipment. However, the decision and timing of it is ultimately yours, of course, and if you are happy with the way your equipment feels and performs then who are we to judge? 😎
By the way, along these lines I am working on paring down three hours of video footage from my session with a professional club fitter into a viewable episode. You may garner some helpful information from that as well. Stay tuned.....

David Allison - Before Cavity-Backs, I had a set of Wilson Staff blades and they were a good set of clubs whereby I was hitting in my 80s when in the Navy and younger - in my 20s. Many years latter, with the same clubs, my score took off in the wrong direction (Pre-KFC Crispy Days) and said “It is time for some new clubs.” Purchased some Cavity-Back Nike Vapor Flys (no longer made by Nike 😪) and increased trajectory (the very high ball; amazing) increased distance dramatically, more stability, and much higher confidence at address. Clubs are just one component but made a large difference to me and I would do the same thing over again. Also, professionally fitted. Hope this helps.
I can say I have gone between two sets recently one that is 4 years old and one that is 10 years old. In a short time I realized distance difference of 6-11 yards improvement in these relatively close in age clubs. I say if you want really enjoy the game to its fullest. Dial the TS crispy swing along with the new technology advances in clubs. Best to you welcome back! ⛳️🎉👍🏻
