Well definitely making progress and really believe on the cusp of breaking through. In sense of getting more consistent and having it all come together!
Driving, although I am not a bomber being able to hit way more fairways and confidence is at max on tee.
Irons really coming around and directional control starting to get way better.
Putting made me crazy yesterday. On the practice green worked on 6 feet and closer, been very inconsistent in that range where it should be 99% in my book. And I was terrible in practice and had 19 putts on front. Started off 2 putt bogey, should have been par save but missed 5 footer! Then promptly sunk 16 footer for birdie on next par 4.Then the wheels fell off with back to back 3 putts and 2 putts rest of the front 9 . Ugh! had too many doubles and one triple for 49. Upside, birdie got me a $30 skin. But 49, blah!
Back nine got focused and shot 43. One triple on longest par 4. But 13 putts and 3 pars so pretty consistent.
I say I am on cusp, again because most of blow ups have been focus and am getting feel with U wedge as I replaced it instead of lob wedge from 45 yds. out.
OKAY BIG ISSUE asking for comments or suggestions!
@Tom Saguto @GolfLivesMatter
I like these changes to swing with ball placement and hands & weight forward. And to add yesterday went with attention to 85% swing and made a difference in directional control(talking irons).
But with old swing(don't want it back for sure), my best and most consistent clubs that I had a load of confidence in were my 3 & 5 fairway woods.
All of a sudden,it's like more terrible hits and tops (never topped before) then every before and have lost total confidence from the fairway with them!
Now with ball alignment placement I use the same spot for my clubs, changing and widening the stance and align a closed stance a little on the longer clubs(ALA Hogan), except on chipping and pitching.
Do I move my fairway woods to a middle placement in my stance?
It is at the point were I have pulled my 3 crossover iron in spots where I wood have hit a 5 out of the rough with decent lie or 3 off fairway.
Is this brain cramp or loss of confidence?
Suggestions needed and wanted!
Thanks
This is primarily a weight distribution / shifting issue because the swing arc is moving to the right. If the swing arc moves to the right, you're not stacked over the ball. The #1 is to ensure you are stacked over the ball at the top. Stacked meaning you will feel pressure on the inside of your trail heel at the top, and you WILL feel tilted at the top. Stacked also means your tailbone has slightly moved towards the target at the top. A little more tailbone shift towards the target is better than a tailbone moving away from the target, but don't over do the tailbone shift, just a little, at least in my experience. Also, ball position with a stacked swing can move slightly more forward ,in the stance, so move the ball around to see any difference. And the distance from the ball at address may start to get closer to the toes.
Then there's the head. A moving head = moving swing arc. Moving head = shoulders are moving because the head is attached. A lot of folks want to rush their swings with fairway woods, and driver, because they are focused on distance, as such they move their head laterally on the downswing to sling the club at the ball. i suggest swinging the 3 or 5W at the same pace and tempo as your do with your 8 iron. The club is much longer thus the shaft speed will be much faster without trying to swing harder.. The "hit instinct" with fairway woods and driver ruin a lot of shots. Even a thinly hit 3W still rolls out so it's not a big deal on a par 5.
Post a video if you can.
Nice playing despite the crappy front 9 putting performance, @Steven!
With regard to the fairway woods, my best suggestion is to take them to the range and force them to start behaving. If everything else is fine, then you've just got to figure it out. Since you're going with a static ball position through your entire bag, I'll leave that out of the conversation. Thins, tops, and fats suggests that you are either steep with these clubs and coming across the ball, your low point is drifting back or perhaps both. Video ought to reveal the culprit, and this is best done at the range where you can see and read the ball flight as opposed to your garage hitting bay.
