Hey everyone. I am fairly new to golf. I started trying to play starting the summer of last year when I installed a golf simulator for one of my old bosses. He gave me a couple of lessons and some used clubs and I have been learning the game and trying to get better ever since. I have really enjoyed learning from watching a bunch of different YT channels, but I am huge fan of Tom's and Sam Goulden's videos, so I have been focusing on Tom's method and Square To Square method. I feel comfortable with hitting my wedges and short irons straight, but I am not comfortable with long irons, hybrids, or the driver at all.
I finally decided it was time to try out Saguto Golf school on Friday, and I already feel like I got my money's worth. The Simplest Golf Swing Ever course has given me an amazing EUREKA moment! When Tom said to let the lead arm just go for the ride and all of the power comes from the trail arm, I have almost completely stopped hitting the ball fat and I can now finally feel what compressing the golf ball feels like. I was using a 7 iron to hit some balls into a net in the backyard, and I feel like I was hitting the balls with so much power I cracked the covers on 2 of my golf balls!
I am looking forward to spending more time on the Simplest Golf Swing Ever and seeing if I can incorporate the same feelings I have now with my longer clubs.
Thanks for the videos Tom and keep up the good work!
Update: For lunch today I took my 9 iron to the range to see how far the ball goes doing only the load and explode drill w/ lead arm and almost no downswing. The balls shot out like mini canon balls with so much power! With no effort I was hitting awesome looking low shots that carried between 100-125 yards.
Now I am going to start practicing with adding the downswing. I love this course!
Welcome Jay to this great school and forum. Way to start out your golf journey!
When Jay mentioned using the trail arm for power, it reminded me off a time in the past where rather than focusing on bowing the lead wrist at the top of the swing I would extend back the trail wrist as far as comfortable. (I saw this from your friend Eric Cogorno.) Then through and past impact you keep your trail wrist extended back and feel like your palm is brushing the grass. This produces a tangy yet tasty cheese wedge!
This is just another way to keep your left wrist pointing down and through contact, but for me it easier to implement and also because I am focusing on the trail arm, it's very easy to give it a good wack with that arm. In addition, for me at least, pulling the right wrist back helps keep my forearms connected to my body.
My guess is that you have a video for that, but I have to find it.
Your thoughts?+
Tom has a way of doing that. Congrats.
PS I think he is using using smoke and mirrors or has hypnotized us with his videos into imagining that we are playing the best golf of our lives!
Welcome to the school and to this great members forum community, @Jay Gist!!
I'm very glad to know that the Simplest Golf Swing Ever course is resonating well with you (although I'm sorry about those cracked golf balls..... 😎)
Thanks for sharing your preliminary improvements, keep up the great work, and I hope you enjoy the enhancements that are coming to the school within the next couple of weeks!
