I should get to the point in my game where I should be able to walk up to the ball and hit it well.I shouldn't need 10 or 20 shots to get it right. I should be able to tee off without practice and have a good start.
While I use my home "garange" to work on things that are possible indoors. I still hit outdoor range in season to train and ingrain muscle memory.
But I HAVE TOO at this season of my life (65), get loose and warm up. That is what my preround range time is about. I start with 2:8 drills with 7 iron till body feels ready to increase the 2:8 swing. Then I go to regular swings with my wedge, 7,5, 2 or 3 irons and then driver. And off to putting green than to 1st tee.
i used to have a buddy who turned up at the second tee with his breakfast in one hand and a coffee in the other. He would tee off with an iron (his way of warming up) and belt one 200+yds down the middle all before he tied his laces! not the norm I would suggest. An old golf pro from Dornoch once told me that 'practice makes permanent', so you also need to be wary of simply belting balls off the range as you might be training yourself to fail. The reason why I signed up here!!
You're in the right place, Malcolm, and welcome also to this great members forum community!!
And yes - I'm not suggesting "machine-gunning" balls at the range or working on a mechanical issue. Just enough to loosen up, dial in your simple swing key, and roll a few putts on the practice green to get a feel for the speed.
I always suggest leaving some time for an appropriate pre-round warmup to seeing who you're dancing with to begin your round. I recognize it's not always possible and I'm as guilty as the next guy of bolting from the car to the tee box with seconds to spare, but that doesn't always play out well, not even for a pro... 😎
I'd like to think that's true, but a little loosening-up before a round always serves me well. I play with a couple of guys who are usually late to our tee-time, roll up just as we're about to hit without them, and then gripe for three or four holes about not making decent contact or having no distance! Well, Duuuhhh.
False for me for sure,

False! For 99.99% of us.
