You can hit balls on the driving range all day but, you are still using range balls and you can’t exactly walk out there and see the spread of your shots and figure out what your averages are on any given day.
so how do you go about figuring out your clubs yardages?
golf sim? Invest in technology? guess?
its definitely something I need to work on, Im just interested in how others go about it
thanks!
dont forget to look me up on YouTube and subscribe, so you can follow my journey learning how to play this frustrating, but wonderful game! YouTube.com/c/BazzaGolf always looking for content ideas too, please comment on any of the videos, I respond to every comment!
For me can't beat yardages in real outdoor course setting. Different situations, remember, yardages can come in different forms, 150 carry lower shots with roll in wind situations, a lot more in outdoor course settings.
That is what is great about this game! Learn what your are capable with your clubs and shots and you will get creative in game play!
In my experience scoring is 100 yards and in!
@Steven cool! yeah I brought a garmin watch for xmas and got 3Arccos sensors in the package.. i have in my 8 iron, putter and hybrid.. my 8 is my go to for a 150..
i was wondering if there was additional value in using an indoor golf facility and getting yardages from a trackman or gcquad? Would you go that far or just accumulate your yardages from the app over time?
Thanks Tom,
Had trouble posting earlier. @Bazza Clarke Don't get frustrated, get motivated! Yes this game can be frustrating but really no more than anything else we do. I played a lot of different team and individual sports in my life. But golf is truly unique. For most as well as me does not come as quickly as other sports endeavors! Which I believe makes it so addicting as well as rewarding.
To the main question. I have always used the 150 yard club as my marker. Whether it was a 5 iron back in the 70's when I started or basically a 7 iron now. then go 10 yards out from there. So if you hit a 7 iron 150, an 8 should be 140 and so forth down the line as well as up the line 6 iron 160 and so forth.
I started when we use to walk off our yardages from markers on the course. Now I use a Garmin watch and have for a while. Just upgraded to the S12 this year. And I believe that is a big tool and at least the minimum tech to have(not big on range finders) but that's me. Like just be able to glance at my watch and have it there quickly.
This year I just invested in Arccos Smart caddie sensors. Great feed back tool and I know it will be a big plus for the serious golfer especially if you plan on league and match play or tourney's, But also would be great for going forward learning. It is a bigger dollar investment. But for me it is essential as alignment sticks this year.
I would at least start with a Garmin. It will give you distance to target, then you can select your club , make your shot and then use measure shot feature. When you get to your ball you will see how far you actually hit it and start to get a feel for your yardages. But remember if you are just starting out there are going to be inconsistences in your KFC contacts! remember what Tom suggest 80% will be fine and more consistent and likely more repeatable.
Good Luck and good swings, looking forward to sharing and hearing progress!

Have a look at this thread as you'll see some suggestions within this realm mentioned there. Be sure to click on "Load More Replies" if that option pops up because you'll see some excellent data detail posted by @Russell Hogue, PhD pertaining to the Arccos Caddie system. I believe @Steven may also have something to add about this.
