Making a change in the golf swing is a difficult and at times frustrating process. What is the best way to practice, combining appropriate drills, full swings and then taking it to the course. It is difficult to sort out which drill is best for your problems, confirming that your are doing the drill correctly and and then take it to the full swing. When playing rounds with friends I seem to quickly go back to old habits. I do video work which becomes frustrating as what you think you have improved does not show up when you record your swing. Your thoughts on how to approach making swing changes would be appreciated.
Thanks Rick Wepsic
I understand your pain, Rick. I've certainly been there; done that...
The curriculum of the online school is designed to easily allow for backtracking as necessary, and this is both expected and encouraged in order to reinforce the fundamental components and enable us to regroup when we hit a wall or experience frustration.
One great thing about this swing is that you can still achieve solid ball striking even at the most basic levels. This is why I oftentimes will refer golfers back to Chapter 2 of the Golf Swing Simplified course when they experience a hiccup, a perceived setback while battling past swing demons, or are simply having difficulty bringing the swing to the course during the learning process. This chapter ingrains the body motions and the weight-forward component, and it culminates with what I call "The Best Golf Swing Practice Drill of All Time". Master that drill and you can then actually use the somewhat abbreviated swing it provides on the course and play very well with it!
So I suggest you think about trying this, Rick: Revisit Chapter 2, work through the lessons and drills to reinforce to the various foundational motions and elements, using video as you deem necessary to ensure proper execution. Then park yourself on Lesson 2.8 - which consists of three separate videos beginning with THIS ONE - and use it as your range and on-course swing until such time that you feel you've taken full ownership of it and are then comfortable moving ahead. I've personally done this myself, and as such I'm confident in the long-term benefits of this strategy.
Beyond that, my next best suggestions would be either a V1 analysis or a private lesson.
