I am confused as far as the ball position goes at setup.
Driver = Back of front heal
Long Iron/Hybrid = Just behind that
6-Pitch Wedge = forward of center by about a club head or 3 Balls width.
Am I understanding this all correctly? Also where should below Pitching wedge be placed for a full shot?
The Grid tells all, @mrgapc. Experiment with different ball positions for different clubs and monitor quality of contact, curvature, and height to understand how these tweaks interact with your swing.
Regarding ball position, i thought I understand the position was more a fucntion of the length of the club, so I set up the ball further forward (at inside of heel) with Driver, and progressively further back with shorter clubs. However, I reviewed the draw and fade videos, and am wondering how I put the info--further back to get draw together with positioning suggestion based on club length. For example how about if I want a draw with my Driver--1 ball width behind the heel?
I prefer not to move. To me, and as you stated, one less variable. Thank you for the clarification!
@jspyke52 - You have some leeway with ball position. I personally like the simplicity of keeping it consistent relative to the inside of the lead heel and adjusting the stance width depending on the length of the club. Alternatively, the Stack & Tilt book prescribes a stock ball position that is in the middle of the stance for short irons, two balls inside the lead heel for middle irons, and incrementally more forward for the longer clubs - the farthest forward being even with the inside of the lead heel for the driver (again, with the stance width increasing as we move from shorter to longer clubs).
It's very important to use alignment sticks when monitoring ball position - one on the foot line, a second one parallel to the first to mark the target line, and a third perpendicular to these to show ball position. Make incremental tweaks to see how different positions affect impact quality and shot shape.
So if you prefer a dynamic ball position that adjusts based on the length of the club, then for a full shot with the PW it should be at or around the center of your stance.
I hope this helps!
