As I attempt to do this swing by the book, meaning adding tilt, I feel in the backswing as though I’m moving one way (towards the target) while my club is moving back. Anyone else experience this? Previously I wasn’t focusing on tilt, just turning shoulders and my weight would pull off front foot with the lead knee pointing to trail knee.

May i suggest u to experiment with the weight shift to the left foot more.
I got 55-60% left till top of the swing, then 85% downswing and 90-95% at impact.
Keeping to much weight from the beginning gets u off balance!
The feeling towards the left foot should be enough to begin with.
Think of it as an "anchor" you will build your swing around till impact.

I had the same sensation when I first tried to keep my weight on the front foot. What helped me was doing the club across the chest drill and trying to point club at the ball. I did this in front of a mirror also helped, after many reps this sensation felt normal. Hope this helps.
