Hi Tom and all,
I started the Saguto Golf golf program about 1.5 months now, and it has been a struggle trying to get rid of all my bad habits (built over the last 5 years!!!). I am still very inconsistent, but I am SLOWLY improving.
Using the weight forward method and bringing my hands around my body, I find that the biggest problem I have is that I am missing the ball or thinning the ball in general. Not sure what the problem is, but I am suspecting it is one of the following:
1) Lead shoulder not pointed down enough;
2) Lead hip moving too much???
Can anyone give me some insight? Not sure if this is a common problem!
Thank you all!
Eugene
Hi Tom!
Thank for the detailed response! I am still going over much of what you said, but I just came back from the driving range and saw some noticeable improvement when I “pointed my tail bone” to the target. I am still inconsistent, but I love this move a lot as it serves to consistently remind me of the weight forward approach.
I definitely need to keep practicing!
Thanks again, Tom!
Eugene
Hi @eugene.ma.sc - Nice to see you here in the great Forum community!!
With regard to your thin shots, first of all I want to be sure that you have mastered the foundational elements in Chapter 1. This is absolutely essential, because they do differ from your previous swing and you will struggle to learn this swing without the proper setup.
There are a few variables that can result in fat, thin and/or topped shots, and if I blindly guess at the wrong cause then it may only serve to exacerbate the issue and be detrimental to your overall swing. If you are not quite ready for a V1 Analysis Lesson - which I highly recommend that everyone in the school consider doing every few months to ensure that they remain on the proper track (once per quarter would be good) - then perhaps you might want to post a couple of videos of your swing in the Forum's Video Analysis Room so your fellow members can offer their thoughts and recommendations. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised with the knowledge base here. One face-on and on down-the-line video would be appropriate. (Be sure to capture the DTL view from your foot line and not the target line.)
If you are willing to risk a self-diagnosis I'll give you two of the more common reasons for what you are experiencing, and they both have to do with the low point of the swing being behind the ball:
1) Your weight isn't forward enough at impact. The 90% Weight Forward/Arms Straight Drill is a good one for this, but it sounds like you may already be working on this one. If you are, please pay strict attention to the details, because if you master this drill you should be experiencing crispy impact and a slight push-draw ball flight. Also, the drill from Fixing Common Swing Problems titled You Need More Lateral Hip Slide may help.
2) Improper wrist and trail arm action. For this, check out the diagnostic video for Early Extension in Fixing Common Swing Problems, and if it seems to apply there are a couple of drills specific to this issue that immediately follow. Also, the Flying Wedge Drill may help with this.
