As title says, I seem to be narrowing down one of the core problems of hitting it fat and slicing is my weight still moving off the ball on the backswing and not getting back. (The other is not enough shoulder down vs back movement). I am sure they are related.
Weight on rear side is probably my biggest issue my whole golf career. Not getting enough lateral hip movement.
Obviously the S&T method says to start with it forward and NOT move the weight off the front at all and in fact go more forward as the swing progresses.
I was at the range yesterday and consistently was hitting it fat, pushing it, and slicing.
I also had the DIVOT BOARD show up in the mail that I had ordered. Interesting tool.
It confirmed the point of contact was hitting behind the ball consistently.
When I use a shorter club (PW- 8 iron) and intentionally setup like I am going to do a low punch shot with weight really forward I actually make pretty good contact.
When I go back to "regular" swing and setup (even with trying a similar mindset of weight stays forward) I am very inconsistent with KEEPING the front side anchored and planted.
In looking in mirror - it is abut 4-6 inch difference in lateral hip position at contact when I keep and get weight forward. Of course when it is forward I have a much better chance of ball first contact.
The DIVOT BOARD confirms this and hitting a bunch of 3/4 swing PW's last night about 70-100 yards confirmed that, also.
So question is how to keep it anchored???
Any help appreciated.
@Mojoman can you post a video of your swing? You say you are moving off the ball, but would like to see the move to provide some assistance.
OK, I have two quick videos I did. I actually think they are fairly representative of where I am at right now. These are actually an improvement from a a couple weeks ago. Even a couple days ago. (Actually these are good swings for me- I do not do this consistently at all yet).
I am at least getting the club to the ground to reach the ball. A lot of times I would practice on this Fiberbuilt mat and miss the mat completely. LOL. That is improving.
The key takeaway I have gotten from this thread and the KNEE path thing is, for me, to actually NOT be afraid to put weight onto that leg in the backswing and load it up. When I load up the front leg, I stay anchored better I think. It also helps me to increase my TILT which is a work in progress also. It is very foreign feeling right now. Like I am going over a cliff. 😂
Two swings here. First one was a little fat. Second one was better.
I just got three in a row good divots on the Divot Board. 😆
I have a whole closet of swing skeletons and ghosts by the way. 😆
The shoulder down/tilt enough thing is also a struggle.
Lol.
@Mojoman - Nice job diagnosing the cause of your contact issue. You're definitely gaining a solid understanding of the system. And the Divot Board is going to be a great tool for helping you gain control over your low point.
It seems as though what you were doing with your PW last night was somewhat similar to the 90% Weight Forward/Arms Straight Drill, but that's a good one to review anyway.
I would like to call your attention to this comment thread and the excellent dialogue between @GolfLivesMatter and @Russell Hogue, PhD. This may help you as well since it does get into the front side "anchoring" that you asked about.
Keep us posted on your progress!
