Well, I started getting crispier contact and was feeling a bit more confident. In fact, I started thinking, "oh thats what its like!" Well I was not videoing myself for a little while and decided I had better have a look. I've had a relapse and I'm chopping again... I'm so ashamed... On a serious note though... it is a bit deflating... So I'm back again, back to the 2.8 drill I suppose is the order of the day. I was seeing some club head speeds in the 90 and a carry in the 180s and a couple in the low 190s with a 4 iron. I figured I must have had something going... Well if I can get those results doing something wrong, what will it be like when I finally get it all right?!
From what I can see, my backswing looks great! Right on the club line from setup. Then I get to the top, my lead arm is just slightly below my shoulder, but I seem to be keeping my relationship to the ball. Maybe slightly flattening. But then, I don't get back to that club line, from setup, in the down swing.
I'm trying to exaggerate lowering the hands to start the downswing as a drill. My contact is suffering from the adjustment but, I guess thats to be expected. I'm also moving my hips forward, toward the impact position, the way Buford demonstrated.
Oh well...
Danny
Tom made "stop the chop" video. Super simple and cleaned up a lot of over the top/above the plane issues for me.
The 2.8 downswing with no manipulation of the wrists for me can be an over the top pull with crispy contact--or--If I keep my back to the target on the downswing AND have no manipulation with wrists as per 2.8, my ball starts on line and stays on line. No pulls.
Back to target on downswing while not manipulating the wrists means that I can't keep the back to the target on the downswing forever, the no-manipulation-of-the wrists-because-they-are-the-same-angle-as-at-address means that I have to make my move to impact. Thus, the no-manipulation of wrists is in control of the downswing as far as my swing thought.
I feel your pain. I’ve suffered with the same affliction for many months. It really sucks because Of the low ball flight and makes holding a green with anything longer than an eight iron nearly impossible. Long and/or elevated par threes especially. Like Tom said I started my “Chopaholics torture chamber” with an alignment stick, a chair and two old gloves yesterday and started getting some good feedback. I’m working with driver and another thing that worked is using an old driver that I don’t mind getting scratched and banged up. Once I eliminated the fear of damaging my good driver I was really able to cut loose and make some swings. 🏌️♂️
@danny - You can always set up the Chopaholics Torture Chamber ala @Buford T Ogletree or the Corral Drill. There's also the intense Trail Forearm Drill or the Overactive Trail Shoulder.
Sure - it's a little temporary step backwards, but cure the chops once and for all and you'll be forever in the land of extra crispy ball striking bliss!
