I Bought a new driver. Played it a couple rounds and while I could tell it was forgiving, I could also see distances were way short.
Today, I ran out for lunch and took a launch monitor to the range. As I expected, I was spinning the holy hell out of it. 5000+ RPM’s. It was terrible.
Coming off the face it sounded and felt good, but just terrible distances.
I tried everything. Swing slower. Move ball forward. Try hitting up on it. Disgusting.
Went back to the car and grabbed my old shaft, swapped and immediately, with the same clubhead speed, I was seeing 20-30 yards more carry.
It’s still not good, spinning the ball 3000-3500 RPMs. But dramatically better than the shaft I had in the new driver.
Lesson for anyone else out there running out to buy a club off the rack. If the shaft isn’t fit for you, numbers can be way off. It’s worth going through hitting clubs and swapping shafts to get things right.
For me, this is super difficult because I use Jumbomax str8 grips. Nobody has shafts with those grips. I feel like swinging a club with mini regular grips is terrible…as in it alters my swing pretty significantly. As a result, it’s a terrible situation. I do my research and make the decisions before ordering based on what I think will happen. But in this case I was way off.
I went with a softer shaft (stiff) Hzrdus Blue. I expected the softer shaft to give me more speed with less effort. I also thought the softer shaft would help me slow down my swing (something I have been working on). Traditionally, I haven’t been off too far…this was a big miss on my math. :)
My bigger issue is, I have two bags so I always buy 2 clubs. I planned on waiting until I tested the new driver, but found a great deal so ordered the second one…such a bonehead.
Then, I found another smoking deal on the newest model and bought it. Figured I would sell one I just bought. Such a cluster!
The shaft is the engine, so it best be properly tuned. The performance variation between different shafts with the same head was a real eye-opener during my fitting session.
