I was drawn to this drill(swinging with an alignment stick gripped in with club and try not to smack your ribs while swinging), as it seems to address several of my bad habits, such as lack of forward shaft lean, late release, I've even been called a "flipper" of the club from time to time. I like this drill so much, that I created a semi-permanent version by shoving an alignment into the butthole(sorry couldn't help my self) of one of my old clubs so I don't have to worry about holding the alignment stick while swinging.
Anyway, on to my question. If I were to practice hitting balls with this, is there any point where the stick should finally make contact with my ribs, or in theory should i be able to perform a full swing without contract? I feel like right now, if I really focus on it, it still to hit me right after impact(if you look at me face on, it would be the club around the 4:30 or 5 o clock position) unless I really "come out of my stance" which to me feels like it will make me top the ball really bad. Is that OK?
I hope this question makes sense, let me know if you need further info.
Thanks!!
I think if you don't roll your wrists in the follow through, you can complete the swing without hitting yourself with the stick. Try a slow motion follow through where you keep the right wrist wedge (flexed) as if doing the 2.8 drill. This should keep the butt end of the club pointed away from you. If you lose the wedge or roll the wrists the butt end of the club will point toward your chest and thus the stick will whack you in the ribs.
