Hey SG community! Had another big aha moment at the range today. Read an earlier post in which someone from the SG community stressed the importance of filming and studying your swing. Well today was my epiphany! I thought I was following the chapter 2.8 sequence to a T and was actually hitting some crispy shots on the range. Got out the V1 app and filmed several face on and side videos of shots with 9 and 7 irons as well as hybrid, 3-wood and driver. Hit some pretty crispy KFC shots and some duds (of course I only saved the crispy ones). Got home and started reviewing and analyzing my swings with the V1 app and oh man was it an eye opener. I am a bonafide chopaholic!!! I was chopping all over the place!!! Even though I hit several decent shots it was such an eye opener!! The biggest flaw I noticed was that I was bringing the club back high above my right shoulder and basically lifting it up and then coming down wayyyyy too steep. When Tom says to bring the club back at your belt buckle level he’s not kidding! It was a humbling but highly motivating discovery. I am excited to get back out to address my choppiness and put the ax to bed once and for all! I thought I had 2.8 down and was following all the sequencing to a T but in reality I realize I’m probably only half way there. It was an eye opener but also a huge motivator.
So in summary SG crowd, you MUST videotape and analyze your swing! You will notice flaws in your swing that you never realized existed but it will also be liberating as the truth shall set you free!
@Tom Saguto, I started at the beginning brother! Build that foundation up!
I just finished my annual golf league along with a big calcutta tourney over the weekend. I'm leaving traditional golf and traditional golf instruction behind. I played some REALLY good golf over the last 20 years (I'm 37 now).
Lost in a playoff in the calcutta and missed out on $2K (that sucked). Anyways, I have just finished watching all of the "golf swing simplified", and can't wait to document the journey.
I bought my mat, per Tom's suggestion got my trusty net and can't wait to hammer drill 2.8-2.9 into the net! Will definitely upload progress.
I'm away for a week and look at all this activity I'm missing! (motherboard on my computer died). I have to get myself back up to speed.
I'll post the videos from this morning over there!
Thanks @Gerry_Lager, I think you've really picked up on the things that are the most stubborn. I see I'm coming under in the backswing and over in the downswing too. I have this ever so subtle move at the transition I need to exorcise. I see it and I cannot figure out how to overcome it...
I have wondered about the impact position... I seem to keep the angle between the club and the lead arm pretty far into the downswing and it seem that I'm at the setup position when I get to impact, in other words, I have a strait line from the ball to my lead shoulder at impact that, lines up with the setup line.
I was recently moving my head around too much. I was moving it forward and downward. I think I've made some improvement there in these videos.
@Tom Saguto I was also going to include video of my lesser resulting swings from this same session. So, in the end I'll send 3 each? just for some context and overall consistency observation? Would that be ok?
@danny - These should be fine for the V1, but if you want to capture some video tomorrow so I can see your swing "where the rubber meets the road" - i.e.: on the course - then there could be some added benefit to that.
Nice analysis by @Gerry_Lager, by the way!!
hi @danny . from face on view I have some observations. I usually find something in the background as reference. In this case the door frame. Looks like your not swaying back but also not sliding forward on the downswing. But looks good. if your freeze it at about the 10 second mark your hands are not in front of the ball.. .i.e. maybe flipping a bit. keep pulling the handle towards the target.
from the DTL view. for me it looks like you're starting the backswing a bit shallow and then looping back over the swing plane just tad?
overall i think pretty good.. just keep the wedge... slide the hips towards the target and try to get the hands forward at impact for a crispier contact.
I wanted to share my most recent swing from yesterday's La Garange session and see is I could get some feed back. I figured the post talking about filming your swing would be a good place to do that! Maybe we should have dedicated area for students analyzing students! I'm hoping to get some on the course video for my next V1 analysis tomorrow morning. Unless, Tom if you're seeing this, you think these are just as good for that. I already have these in my locker in the academy. If there is no real benefit to the on the course videos, why not just do these?
Anyway, I look forward to any comments my fellow Saguto students may have!
Danny
I'm glad to know that you finally took the plunge, @RobH!! Quite revealing, right??
Nice job with the self-diagnosis, and yes - it will be very interesting for the Community to see the before and after comparisons!
Unlike an instructor who might try to be nice so you'll come back for another lesson, video don't care. It'll beat you up, down, and sideways with absolutely no emotion, but ultimately - as long as you know what to look for (which is all in the school) - it will dial you in!
I had one of those days where nothing seemed to be working on Thursday 7/15 and in that frustrated moment decided to stop being lazy and try out the V1 app the first time. Complete shocker on the "Feel isn't Real" topic. Found several items in first couple videos that I thought I was doing well and TOTALLY WAS NOT.
First thing I noticed was my right knee being very bent at setup. I'm a tall wirey guy and trying so hard to find some grace in the swing. Looked like a very exaggerated "around my body" take away too that led to way too flat a swing plane. Yeah it was shallow but way TOO shallow.
Other thing kind of cool was since this was my first go with V1 I chose to use my 10" tablet from behind me and it turned out to be a great mirror too to check some setup while it was recording.
I'm converted. Don't think I'll ever swing in the garage minus recording so I can track my progress from these first videos. Will be cool in a month or so to show before / after.
Can't stress enough how useful this is! The right knee bent at setup and working on correcting that has already helped.
Thanks @Tom Saguto . Had a feeling that would be your answer. Just did a reshoot and will review and submit if they make the cut. I too am looking forward to you reviewing my swing!
Thanks again,
James
@Tom Saguto I have my S&T swing 1.0 ready for analysis, I think. Might post an update in the thread I started a few days ago. I was able to get the V1 app to work reasonably well but I have a question about framing of the shots. I saw your comment regarding my earlier screenshots and I knew the DTL wasn't right - just did that when I was playing around with the camera. My question is: is it necessary to get the entire swing in the frame? V1 is set up for portrait mode and I'm finding it hard to get the club head in every frame without zooming way out. Is it better to zoom out and capture everything?
Thanks in advance.
@Matt Rutkowski Thanks for the response. I imported to my phone, then into the app. I can also just pop the SD card into my computer to view the files in VLC Player. To my eyes, video is much better quality. Also, with GoPro I can simply tell it to start and stop without moving. And thanks for the advice with regard to premium. If I'm spending $50, I'd rather pay Tom for swing analysis.
To be honest I don’t think premium is worth it. Are you importing to a phone or tablet or to a computer? I have been recording using the app with my iPad but find the frame rate to be a little slow. Could just be my camera. I might try importing from my go pro and see if that is better
Great thread but have a general question about using V1. Is everyone using the app's camera to record or using other devices (phone camera or external) and importing the file into the app? I found the app to be really buggy (on Android, anyway) and have been using my GoPro to record my swing. I've tried importing and it works. Also, is it worth paying for premium? Thanks in advance.
That's a very common residual issue, @lagerg82, and you've just reconfirmed the importance of using video regularly. Great self-discovery, and nice job finding the drills that address it!!
Thanks! I'm glad you are enjoying the school content!!
Just joined last week and recorded my swing from down the line while doing 2.8 drill... had no idea I was rolling my hands a bit on the takeaway and club going back too shallow/low. found couple drills to work it out. This content is fantastic. Thanks @Tom Saguto
I haven’t taken a video of myself for awhile as my ball striking has improved. However, this past Friday I went to the driving range and had a very good session with all of my clubs – irons and driver. Then, on the way home I took a detour and went to a second driving range. Never done that before. That second time around something was off. Very off. So much so I took a video of me hitting some irons and the driver. I didn’t watch them there. I finished up practicing some chipping and putting and went home. I got home and watched the videos. Oh, boy, that didn’t look good. I then took a video of myself during a full speed practice swing. I watched that video and darn if the swing doesn’t look pretty darn good – extension, straight arms – just wonderful. So, I did a side-by-side comparison of my practice swing and my swing on the range. I’m looking at two different people. It is an eye opener. So, I’m now working on what I believe to be the issue on the range and then on the golf course. I did play twilight golf last night and got in about 13 holes. I didn’t keep score but I tried to move what was missing out onto the course that exists in the practice swing and on the net. It’s there – no question. I know my body can do it as I can see it in the video. And with this frame of mind there was no need to get upset or frustrated on the golf course. It was the most relaxing golf I have ever played in my life. And what I’m working on is quite a challenge and it’s going to take some time to adjust and for me It’s the hardest with the driver. My driver did some really strange things last night. Lol It was weird but I know why it was happening. The rest of my play was pretty good and much improved. Four holes I did par – might have been five. I hit some really nice shots when I could do what my body was supposed to do. Some greens I overshot which was a good thing as the ball striking was just crispy and clean. But the driver is the most challenging right now and I know Tom just made a video this weekend I have to watch but I also know exactly what my issue is. My body just needs to listen. So, anyway, just thought I’d share comparing a video of my practice swing with my swing hitting a ball on the range as it was an eye opener. Compare yourself with yourself if you feel that your practice swing is good but the actual swing has a challenge. For me when I hit the ball on the range or golf course I want to hit it so far and hard that my upper body takes over and my lower body isn’t there in the swing. Practicing on the net or before hitting a ball I have a lot less tension and my body works easier and does at it should. Never would have known this had I not taken the videos to compare. I could not believe the tension in my arms during a normal swing on the range. Wow!! Even my face I looked like I was trying to lift a car. 😊 Take videos!! Its’ a must. (and the book Tom has recommended for the mind battle on the golf course should be here any day now)
along with the V1 app I also use an app called IP Webcam. It's a poor man's Live View camera. You basically start the app on your phone and that acts as the camera. Then you can take another device (I use my chromebook) and place it on the floor in front of you as your address the ball. The app on your phone gives you an IP address you put in your browser on the other device (my chromebook) . You can then view your practice swings real time to compare 'real vs. feel).
You convinced me. Filming tomorrow with my wife at the range.
