Hey all! Just became a member today! I've been very impressed with Tom's youtube videos so I thought I'd give this a shot. Wahoo! Anyway, my concern is my height. I'm over 6'5" so my fitted clubs are 5 degrees upright and 1.5 inches over standard. All this adds up to a much more vertical swing plane than average as I just can't reach the ball with a flatter plane.
This morning I was at the range trying the drill where Tom is emphasizing that you should swing around and not up and down for effortless power: https://saguto.golf/p/top-3-ball-striking-keys-key-2
I am not getting around very well at all and it makes me wonder if my height will cause problems for me and stack and tilt.
This pic below is me at address with my driver (before I had heard of Tom so I am not leaning toward the target). Just to give you an idea.
Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks all!
Ben
Welcome to the online school and this fantastic members forum community, @benjamintullis!!
As @KFC_Kyle & @Patrick Anlauf have already indicated, this swing is absolutely not height-dependent, nor is it a "flat" swing! I'm "short" at 6'1", and S&T was life-changing for me. You're simply going to transition from a motion where the shoulders likely turned more level while you shifted into your trail side and independently lifted your arms - which is a two-plane move that requires precise coordination of these motions in order to achieve consistency - to a one-plane motion where the lead shoulder will work downward while the hands are taken "deep" so that at the top your lead arm will be on or very close to the tilted shoulder plane with the hands behind your trail shoulder. It's a very powerful and easily repeatable motion.
Have a look at 6'4" DJ at the top. Does this look flat? Nope. But that's what we're talking about, with or without his trademark bowed wrist.
@benjamintullis Welcome! I'm just a few inches shorter than you at 6'2" and this swing works amazingly well.
I can't speak for Tom, but the instruction he gives on "swing around your body" (although very true) is more of a FEELING. It is to help you ingrain the correct path. If you record yourself (and I highly recommend you do) you'll see that what might feel really flat and shallow, is actually not at all! My advice is to stick with it and be patient with yourself.
I found the "Get out and play! Fast track" lesson to be my go-to.
@benjamintullis - Hi Ben, I too am 6’ 5” and don’t have a problem with the new swing change. Just follow the course training and you will do fine.
