Hello, My name is Tom and I am happy to be here. Unlike many places in the world, I am stuck on the island of Oahu in Hawaii.😁 Lots of places to play but driving ranges with grass are hard to come by and most are with mats. I go from hitting brilliant shots to topping or hitting behind. I am going to give this young fellow a shot at helping me even if I am 65. My question is this. Should I wear my golf shoes to practice even on the mats? My shoes are traditional spikes the do raise me up a bit. I have not looked through the forum yet and was wondering if Tom ever comments? thank you for your time.

Welcome to this great Forum community, @Tom Holt! Despite your "plight" of being "stuck" in paradise, we hope to see you participating and contributing here regularly!
With regard to your question about hitting off mats, Please have a look at this video from my YT channel where I demonstrate a training aid called the Divot Board. The Divot Board has really stepped up the effectiveness and efficiency of my practice sessions, helping me to groove a crispy pure impact (with or without a ball) and also eliminating those "false positives" that are so commonly experienced when hitting off a mat. If interested you can get your Divot Board here.
Aloha,
Tom
As a general rule, I would practice in whatever shoes you play If practicing full swings. I don’t think it’s as important if your practicing short game.
