Hello, I have been working through the online course over the past 2 months and using my practice net at home and regular driving range sessions. I played my normal Saturday competition today and I am glad to announce my slice has dissapeared and replaced with mostly straight shots. I am able to drive the ball 220 metres total (not carry.) With my old swing I could drive the ball may 130 metres into the trees. I have been primarily working on keeping my lead arm straight ( at this stage is a pretty short back swing) but then shifting my weight forward to accelerate through impact. The only issue I am having is with my driver I am not getting much height (Club set at 12 degrees) but I suspect that is a combination of 2 factors. Not completing my follow through and not having the ball forward enough in my stance. I am sure my 27 handicap will come down in due course. Finished 6th out of 65 today and won the C Grade.
Keep up the great work everyone
Cheers
Wayne
Well done, @Auswi. That's some dramatic improvement!! Just keep working on the driver; it will come around for you if you are patient with the process. In the meantime, enjoy the fact that you are now hitting it 90m further than previously and putting it in the fairway! That's a HUGE difference!
If the driver continues to challenge you - or if you would like for me to evaluate your swing and give you a personalized plan for resolving it - we can always arrange for a V1 Analysis to get it figured out.
Keep up the great work and have fun out there!!
This a copy and paste of Tom from another thread in the general section. I want to ask him, based on my above post. Can't the hips drive too far and too fast on downswing? Isn't there some kind of balance?
Toms words.....2) Their hips are not continuing their lateral slide through impact. This is common with the longer clubs as the wider stance means that the hips have a greater distance to travel. If the hips stop moving laterally towards the target on the downswing then their rotation takes over, changing the low point and rerouting the club. This can produce a variety of undesirable results including fat and thin contact, topped shots and popups, straight pulls, and “banana” slices. Here is a drill from the Fixing Common Swing Problems section specific to building in more lateral hip slide in the downswing.
I had the same issue with driver being on the low side as well when I first started keeping weight forward. It could be ball position needs to be slightly forward. How high do you tee the ball? You want a solid half ball above driver face when setting it on the ground. I get from walmart these white taller tees with blue marks, so it's high enough and consistently the same height. The other thing that I think I did, probably sometimes still do, that will cause that low shot, is laterally moving the hips too far forward on downswing, thinking this will generate more power, I think this will cause a steeper angle of attack. It's the feeling of NOT "staying behind the ball." That's my "feeling" on this anyway, Tom can comment let me know if that is a feel, or real thing.
