I've always hit shanks now and then but after switching to stack and tile I found myself hitting them more and more - especially when doing a pitch shot. Needless to say its very frustrating. Finally did some late night investigation as to common causes and I think I have it down.
During my swing I have my weight more on the balls of my feet cause me to inch forward just a little bit. This caused me to hit the hosel and send the ball to right field. I was reading reddit for common tips for shanking and found some of the most common fixes would be to put your weight more on the arches, stand further away from the ball (I don't think this was my problem) and don't throw your hands at the ball.
So this morning before work I made my normal set up and focused keeping my weigh back on my feet - not toes - and kind of sitting down like slight hockey stance. My next main focus was making sure my hands came inside - close to my body - rather then out at the ball. And it was a success. Hitting everything from full shots to small pitch shots clean and krispy™. I didn't have one shank or miss hit this morning while practicing it!
Anyway, nothing can sour my mood like hitting a shank after practicing so hard and just wanted to share some ideas I found that helped me.
That's awesome, Mike!! Nice job self-correcting this <unmentionable> issue!! 😎
Since @GolfLivesMatter has done an extensive amount of research on this topic, I thought I'd tag him here as an FYI.
Thanks for sharing your process for resolving the "h-rockets"!!
