Hi Tom,
I added weights to my putter per your suggestion which has been great for my distance control. I'm still struggling with 8-10 foot putts. I know many golfers use training tools like mirrors for practicing. You will probably tell me to use the orange Home Depot stick! :) Any suggestions on how to improve on making these length puts (other than getting my approach/chips closer to the pin? Tnx
Matt
I've been trying the gate drill and it's helpful. I'll try the Tiger approach!
I will give that a try! for the tip!
Have you ever tried putting with right or left hand only ? Most golfer have a dominant hand. I practice with right hand only. My left hand usually pulls or pushes my putts off course.
Here's what I do and even Tiger Woods does - 3 ft away, do 12 one hand putts ,then 6 two hand puts up to 50 putts. When using both hands on the putter, I first swing with one hand and keep that relationship with the putter,( grip pressure, swing, etc) and then lightly add left hand but you are still putting with the right hand.
Secondly- I also do a one handed putt looking at the hole only drill. You would be surprised how you will naturally guide the putt in the hole. Jordan Speith does this.
So, what I do and feel before a real putt is: stimulate / practice swing my putt with one hand looking at the hole only, then I quickly add my left hand remembering the visuals of looking at the hole only.
Hi Matt - I'm glad to know that the added weights helped you!
As for those 8-10 footers, yes - you could use alignment sticks, but it can actually be accomplished with a couple of tees. Here's what you do: Find a putt of that general distance on the practice green and dial in the correct read. Then set up a "gate" with the tees that matched the break and is just wide enough for your putter head to pass through - perhaps with some margin of tolerance on either side to start, but then gradually tightening the gate as you become more adept and consistent. Make your stroke while trying to avoid touching the tees. Two things should happen during this drill: 1) You should find that you're able to sink a lot of putts, and 2) you are going to develop a feel for that grooved stroke. After a sufficient amount of time sinking and grooving, remove the gate and feel that same stroke with putts of different directions, slopes, and breaks.
Let me know how this works for you.
Tom
