Hello dear community,
I’m a bit lost with my swing and don’t really know what I should work on to progress from here.
Here is what I have been working on:
- Accelerating right shoulder: Did a V1 analysis with Tom a few weeks back and the main feedback is that the club is coming too much from the inside on the downswing because my right shoulder is staying stuck, and hips are bumping too much forward to try to hit the ball. I’ve been trying to really accelerate the arms while keeping hips quiet but I see very little change in subsequent videos. In the video linked below, I’m thinking “come over the top“ and ”swing hard left” and I’m still coming 20° from the inside :-D
- Drill 2.8: When doing a short backswing and short follow through with club pointed down + flying wedge I’m getting good contact but some days I still have the problem of coming too much from the inside, which give me top shots, hooks, hitting behind the ball etc. I also try to keep my back leg straight and hips quiet to prevent the inside arc but it doesn’t seem to help.
In the attached video I put a slow mo of down the line and face on. What I don’t like:
- I think I’m very much scooping the ball through impact
- Still hitting the ball by only bumping the hips, no shoulder rotation, club too much inside.
I’m a bit lost and don‘t know what to work on here. I have so much different swing thoughts now that my level on the course has really regressed.
Thanks for your help !!

Well done, Martin! Yes - each new pass through the content does have a tendency to reveal new previously hidden nuggets of golden info. That's a result of the deeper understanding we are incrementally gaining as a result of our hard work and progress.
Thanks for the update, and keep up the great work!!
Thank you all for the analysis and the suggestions! Even though I have gone through this program at least 3 times, it’s crazy how much stuff you actually start really understanding through each new pass :-D
So, had a great range session today and all comments definitely helped:
- I’m taking the club more in and lower, having hands through right biceps (still feels weird)
- Really starting to understand the flying wedge drill, seems like I have forgotten how to do it properly after a few weeks. The thing that works for me is imagining I’m hitting the nail planted in the ball with my right palm.
- To try to stop swinging from the inside, I’m working on keeping my back leg straight + feeling like I’m rotating faster with my shoulders through impact
Thanks again for the tips! Still a lot of work but getting there
Nice looking swing.
But at the beginning your head moves to the target, I think you should more extend, be sure your left shoulder points down (your chin seems to touch your shoulder),
to move your hips till end with turn (as said by Gerry) look at this lesson

from the DTL view. Appears your hips may be stalling. You're bumping them forward but then they stop. When you stop moving the hips you lose your posture (i.e. stand up) and flip. The hips need to start the downswing and continue forward and turn
maybe try the flying cheese wedge drill?
Hi Paula,
Oh wow, I definitely see what you mean. I thought I actually had a good backswing position :-D I just tried this in front of the mirror and now understand what Tom is always saying in his videos "club should feel low above the hips". I really feel like my arms don't go too far and like I need to stretch my rigjht shoulder to go further.
On downswing it indeed feels like I'm coming down on a better arc from this backswing position.
I need to confirm this when I get back on the range, looking forward to the next session :)
Thanks a lot for your comment!!!
Cheers from Belgium

Hi Martin
I don't know if you will accept my observations. I am just starting to "get" the S&T swing. I know it all in my head. I just have to get it into my body. Anyway, here's what I see. It looks like you are losing some control of the club on your backswing. Your hands are going too high and in back of you. The clubhead does not stay parallel to the spine angle. Instead, at the top of the backswing, it is almost parallel to the ground. This causes you to come down to the ball too steeply, thus the scoop.
Maybe you are bumping your hips too much, (?), in order to flatten the swing path. If you check out Tom's Fast Track videos, drills 4 & 5, he shows how to get the hands in proper top of backswing position, which should be in the middle of the bicep. You get additional swing arc by extending the spine and, (I think), turning, or stretching the right right shoulder back. (I'm not up to doing this last part yet.) I hope my observations are accurate. Keep watching Tom's videos, and practicing. I find S&T a challenge, but a lot of fun to work on.
Tom, I'd love to learn if my observations are correct.
