Quick question as I work on the backswing.
Do you start the turn IN with your hands as soon as you start your takeaway as you move hands toward your trail side hip, or do you go along the toeline straight back for the first part a little longer? I have watched several of the backswing videos and it seems like Tom starts turning on the circle inward with low hands pretty quickly.
I hit about 50 pitch shots of 20-30 yards tonight around practice green and it seemed like the sooner I started turning inside, the better crisper contact I was getting.
I am working gradually on moving from shorter irons to mid and longer irons and driver.
It feels weird to not go straight back and then turn and lift. Also feels weird to come from inside so much on downswing. But as I trust it more I am more often hitting clean shots compressing the ball. Feels like I am swinging to opposite field in extreme way in baseball but ball contact is great when I do it correctly.
Nice progress update, @Mojoman! Sounds like you are on a good track now. Stick with 2.8/Flying Wedge and be patient as you move incrementally into longer clubs. Also, make sure to only take your backswing to your body's natural stopping point, because anything beyond that will cause breakdowns and summon up the ghosts of swings past. And remember - because you are taking the hands in deep it may "look" like just a 3/4 swing in comparison to an old shift & lift move, so you need to learn to trust that it really is all that you need.
