Tom: has been a while since I have posted. The swing has improved with better contact. Handicap Index has also improved 18.0 to 13.1. Main issues is tendency to pull or pull hook longer clubs (hybrids and driver). The shorter clubs are more consistent. Can post another V1 video if that is the best option. Swing path does not appear to me to be over the top.
Thanks Rick Wepsic
Definitely two of the more common causes, @Gerry_Lager. Thanks for sharing!
From my personal discovery, when I pull those longer clubs it either 1) club too steep so I emphasize a more shallower backswing wrapping around your body and 2) slide the hips laterally on downswing or 3) both 1 and 2. This usually improves it for me
Nice to hear from you again, @rickwepsic! I was actually thinking recently that we hadn't heard from you in the Forum in quite some time, so I'm glad to see that your return brings with it a very encouraging update on your rather substantial improvement!
With regard to the pulls and pull hooks with the longer clubs, have you gone through the Shot Shaping course and familiarized yourself with the "Grid" yet? This course is designed to: 1) help you read and interpret ball flight, 2) understand how to make adjustments/corrections, and 3) learn how to carve shots in both directions. For example, a pull-hook is the result of a clubface that is closed to both the target line and the path at impact, whereas a push-draw is the result of a face that is open to the target line and closed to the path.
I suggest first taking some video and self-analyzing it to verify whether your path is properly in-to-out with the longer clubs. If it is, then your solution may be something as simple as adjusting ball position.
Let's start with these two recommendations, and then if any swing intervention is necessary we can arrange for a V1 or try some of the stock fixes in the school to address any cause you may have uncovered in your own analysis.
@rickwepsic - I struggles sometimes with hooking the longer clubs as well. A pull in general means you are swinging out to in, but as you stated you are not swinging over the top. That means you have shifted right on the grid.
When I do this, it's normally not enough extension in the backswing. I set my hips really forward (upper body slightly tilted away) and I just don't extend on the backswing, which causes my pulls
