Hey lpiecta it sounds like you may be topping the golf ball or hitting thin shots. I recommend making sure you're doing these things first:
Arms Straight - if the arms break down you are almost guaranteed inconsistent contact
Lead Shoulder Down - turn the lead shoulder down to give you a relationship with the golf ball in the swing. "Shoulder down to find the ground" I always tell my students.
Weight Forward - keeping the weight forward throughout the swing will help you to hit ball first and take a divot in front of it.
