Things were making progress last year, then due to Winter in the Uk, going on tour and then Covid, I hadn’t swung a club until this week.
First shots felt and looked Ok, until I watched the video evidence. My old swing was there, as OTT, choppy and cutty as ever. I’ve hit 50 balls every day this week and am posting Tuesday and Yesterday, to see if people think I am heading in the right direction. I am largely working on Tom’s OTT drills, but yesterday I put an alignment stick on my foot line behind me and was working on dropping the club to be on that line on the way down before turning through.
One thought I had last night was that I may not have enough/any forearm rotation on my backswing. Would this be the cause of my getting the club too upright on way back?
Anyway, help is much appreciated. I’ll post Tuesday’s horrid swing first.
Tom, I’ll send you a V1 this weekend.
Many thanks, am reading up on the best angles for recording the swing as I realise these aren’t optimal. Will try out Slow Mo tomorrow. Again, all good points. I’ve never managed to not stall my hips so this is something I must, and will sort out this year. Also, I do find it hard to get target oriented at the range, and the ball is probably close to 100 % of my focus/intent. Many thanks, again. Adam
Ok, here’s a picture that shows what I was talking about. Hips stall out, arms crash into body, so instead of getting the arms freely extending out with wedge in right wrist, your left arm collapses. I don’t have the book right here, but if you have the book, look at the finish position. From this angle, I would do the 90 percent weight forward drill and make sure you are getting arms extended holding the wedge in right wrist. Your issue may even be as simple as intent. You need to hit down and through past the ball…right wrist stays bent back. Effortless extension out toward the target. If the ball becomes the target then things can easily stall out because your body will stop at the target (the ball).
This is face on. Even with an iPhone 13 Pro, it still doesn't get every frame..........
Thanks Russell, I appreciate your time looking at this, and that all sounds pretty clear. I'll post the same face on swing and down the line (ish) that I sent to Tom yesterday.
Ball flight for the last 20 or so shots yesterday, was straight with a very slight draw. 6i was carrying about 150yds hitting off the mat.
With the getting left early, I'll try and find something to bump into on my left side, and work on that at the range. That and the tailbone thought. Cheers, Adam
@1759adam the first swing is a clear over the top chop. Easiest way to see is to stop the video on the downswing and verify that the swing path traces the trail right arm. The picture is from your second swing where you get the club into a nice plane on way down. That’s so much better than the first swing, it makes me wonder…The question is did the ball flight on that shot match your typical flight or was that a picture of your ideal flight? It appears to me, from this angle, that you get into a great position at the top. But the transition is late…meaning you didn’t start getting left early enough. Without the forward/left move, your arms don’t have room to swing in front and through…the result is, you have to stand up, which causes the body to stall, and arms get bunched up in through swing/followthrough. To me, the tailbone drill…tailbone getting left would be a good place to start because it would help get your weight more forward so you could unwind without the need to jump up and come out of posture and since the tailbone forward would happen earlier in your swing you would probably find more effortless power… From an amateur golfer…that’s what I see. Btw - I am trying to be critical, Really, I would need to see a face on swing at the same time to see your impact conditions. Plus, I like to see ball flight before suggesting any changes.
Not exactly mild. Was maybe 4 degrees yesterday, but nice and bright. Heading back to the range to record some V1 footage to send you, Tom. Cheers! Adam
Sounds good, @1759adam! And you know some members to tag here if you don't get responses to your video posts.
My question: Is it really that mild up there in the UK this time of the year???
A 4 iron in Tuesday’s video and yesterday’s 6 iron swing. Sorry they are not the same club, but didn’t video any 4 iron yesterday. I hope it looks less steep………?
